Planning for the Railway - Bridge structure execution planning

I
f the DB AG builds a new bridge under an existing line, renews an existing bridge or at the request of the road construction company widens a bridge because of larger thoroughfare width, it must always build under traffic - "under rolling wheel". A diversion for a longer time is not possible in the normal case. Construction under traffic requires a great expense of auxiliary construction measures, which naturally also drive up construction costs considerably.

It is not unusual that the share of the construction costs for the pure creation of the bridge structure amounts to only 1/3 of the total costs and the remainder of the construction costs is incurred by shuttering measures, auxiliary bridges, insertion, construction in night and weekend breaks and for further measures for maintaining the traffic.

In addition to these increased construction costs the Germany Railway calculates so called operating impediment costs, costs due to slow running, due to rail substitution traffic and due to increased labour costs for maintaining the traffic.

Together with the Komm company a construction method was developed already in 1989 that was patented under the designation "Method and equipment for inserting structural members, especially bridge structural members" (Patent No. 94 19449).

With our patented method for inserting railway bridges around 200 bridges with dimensions of up to 70 x 40 m and weights up to 7,500 t have been inserted. The structures can be moved exactly in height and position with an insertion speed of around 10 m/h and an insertion force of around 3% of the dead weight.

It represents from the railway operating viewpoint and from an economic viewpoint a very good construction method for producing railway overbridges, proven in the meantime by a large number of completed structures. The essential advantage compared with other construction methods lies in minimizing the railway-relevant construction time for the substructures and the resulting reduction of the operating impediments.
